El Yaque: the Best Kitesurfing Spot in the Caribbean

El Yaque is not the most beautiful beach on Margarita. The water is not the clearest or the sand the whitest. But for kitesurfers, it is among the best places on the planet — and there is a very simple reason for that.

Why the wind is perfect

El Yaque sits on the southwest of the island, right in the corridor of the Atlantic trade winds. From December to August a steady side-shore wind blows between 18 and 30 knots, without the turbulence of European Atlantic spots. The lagoon waters are shallow and flat — ideal for learning — and further out there are waves for the advanced.

The season

The best time is January to July, peaking in February and March. Wind arrives almost daily, from midday until sunset. In August it begins to ease and from September to November it is more variable. Even so, good wind days appear in any month of the year.

Learning at El Yaque

There are several certified kitesurfing schools on the beach with instructors who speak Spanish and English. A complete beginner course (from zero to riding solo) lasts 9 to 12 hours and costs between 350 and 500 USD depending on the operator. Equipment rental for those who already know is available by day or week.

Beyond the kite

El Yaque also attracts windsurfers and, in recent years, wing foil riders. The beach has several informal bars and restaurants overlooking the water, filled with an international atmosphere you do not find elsewhere on the island. It is a place for mixing sport and relaxation.

Getting there from Pampatar

El Yaque is about 35 km from central Pampatar, crossing the island to the southwest. By car it is approximately 35–40 minutes. There is no direct public transport — the most practical option is to rent a car or take a taxi.

If it is your first time on a kite, book the course in advance during high season — schools fill up fast. Safety gear (helmet, impact vest) is included in lessons; you do not need to buy it.
