When someone arrives on Margarita for the first time and asks where to stay, the answer almost always splits the locals into two camps: Pampatar people and Porlamar people. Here is the difference.
Pampatar: the fishing village that grew up
Pampatar sits on the calmest bay on the eastern side of the island. The colonial fort of San Carlos Borromeo, fishing boats at dawn and the seafront avenue give it a human scale that Porlamar never had. Streets are narrow, restaurants serve freshly caught fish and the pace is slow.
Pampatar beach has calm water — perfect for swimming, for families with children and for sunbathing without waves. A few minutes by car you reach Playa El Agua, Playa Caribe and the more open beaches on the north coast.
Porlamar: the commercial capital
Porlamar is the largest city on the island — with shopping centres, clubs, a nearby airport and an active nightlife. Sambil mall, Avenida Santiago Mariño and a restaurant boulevard make it the obvious choice for those who want action. The immediate beaches (Bellavista, El Ángel) are more urban and not the prettiest.
For the beach traveller
Pampatar wins. The bay is cleaner, the atmosphere is more relaxed and you are five minutes from the best beaches on the east side. If you want to wake up, walk to the shore and not see concrete, Pampatar is your zone.
For the urban or business traveller
Porlamar wins. It is closer to the airport, has better public transport and the restaurant and nightlife offer is much bigger. If you only have a few days and want to make the most of every hour, central Porlamar makes sense.
Our recommendation
For most travellers who want the full Margarita experience — beach, local food, authentic atmosphere — Pampatar is the best base. Porlamar is 20 minutes by car and you can drive over whenever you need something Pampatar does not have.
